August 13, 2018

To have a first look or to not...that is the question. Figuring out if you want to do a first look or not is a big decision. And both logic and emotion will have to go into the decision. Keep reading for some pros and cons of having a first look.

First, what is a first look? One of the biggest trends is having a first look, which means creating a special way for the groom to see his bride before the ceremony. Tradition is of course that the first time anyone sees the bride is when she is walking down the aisle, but now we are seeing a lot of couples opt to have a special moment before the ceremony.

PRO
You Can Make it to Cocktail Hour

For many couples, it is important to make it to the cocktail hour. If you do a first look before the ceremony, that will free up time after the ceremony to head on over to the cocktail party because you will already have many of your couple portraits already finished.

You have a special moment together before the ceremony

On your wedding day, you really are not going to have much, if any, time together just the two of you. You will be surrounded by friends and family who cannot wait to spend time with you. Having a first look gives you a few moments of together time before the ceremony that you might not otherwise have.

Amazing pictures

Some of the best pictures from couples weddings do come from a first look. It is all of the real and raw emotions of the day right there in an intimate meeting. You can really get creative with the first look too!

CON
You have to get ready earlier

If you are deciding to have a first look, that means you need to be ready anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour before you would have otherwise needed to be ready. That means being in the hair and makeup chair (aka waking up) earlier than you might have originally planned.

You are breaking tradition

If any of you are super superstitious, this is not the trend for you. It is important, and rightfully so, for some couples to not break the tradition of seeing each other before the wedding. Stay away from this!

Might be awkward

Some couples can find the first look a bit awkward, and totally understandable. Sometimes after the big "reveal", they don't really know what to do next or what to feel next. The photographer should help with the flow of the first look so this should be avoided.
